Accessibility Statement

Last updated: 1 April 2026

1. Our Commitment

What's On Merthyr (whatsonmerthyrtydfil.co.uk) is committed to making this website accessible to as many people as possible, regardless of disability, device, or browser. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA.

We know accessibility is an ongoing effort and we continue to improve the site. If you find anything that creates a barrier for you, please let us know.

2. What We Have Done

We have taken the following steps to make this website accessible:

  • Keyboard navigation — all interactive elements (links, buttons, form fields) can be reached and activated using a keyboard.
  • Screen reader support — we use semantic HTML elements (headings, lists, landmarks, labels) so screen readers can interpret the page structure correctly.
  • ARIA labels — buttons and interactive elements that lack visible text labels have aria-label attributes to describe their purpose.
  • Alt text — images include descriptive alternative text or are marked as decorative where appropriate.
  • Colour contrast — we aim to maintain sufficient contrast between text and background colours throughout the site.
  • Responsive design — the site is designed to work on all screen sizes, from mobile phones to large desktop monitors.
  • Form labels — all form fields have associated visible labels so users know what information is required.
  • Skip navigation — we use appropriate page structure to allow screen reader users to navigate efficiently.
  • No content that flashes — we do not use content that flashes more than three times per second.
  • Readable fonts — we use clear, readable typefaces and allow browser font size adjustments.

3. Known Limitations

We are aware of the following areas where accessibility may not yet be fully met:

  • Event images — some event listing images are sourced from third-party event organisers and may not always have ideal alternative text. We continue to improve descriptions as new images are added.
  • Embedded maps — venue pages include an embedded map link (Google Maps direction link). Users who cannot use maps can find the full venue address displayed as text on the same page.
  • Third-party content — links to external ticketing platforms, venue websites, and social media pages are outside our control. Those sites may have their own accessibility limitations.

We are working to address these limitations over time.

4. Using the Site with Assistive Technology

This website has been built with assistive technology compatibility in mind. It should work with:

  • Screen readers (such as NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, and TalkBack)
  • Keyboard-only navigation
  • Browser zoom up to at least 200% without loss of content or functionality
  • High contrast mode in Windows and macOS
  • Reduced motion preferences (we do not use decorative animations that cannot be suppressed)

5. Submitting Events and Venue Information

Our Submit an Event and List Your Venue forms are designed to be accessible to all users. All form fields have visible labels and required fields are clearly indicated. If you experience difficulties submitting an event or venue using the online forms, you can contact us directly at [email protected] and we will help you get your event or venue listed.

6. Suggesting Event Updates

Each event listing page includes a "Suggest an update" section where you can flag corrections. This feature uses accessible form controls with visible labels. If you cannot use this feature, you can email corrections directly to [email protected].

7. Technical Information

This website is built using Astro (a static site generator), Tailwind CSS for styling, and standard HTML. It is hosted on Cloudflare Pages.

The site is a static website — there are no server-side sessions, logins, or dynamic application states. Content is delivered as standard HTML pages.

We rely on Web3Forms to process form submissions. Their service uses standard HTML form controls and should be compatible with assistive technology.

8. Reporting Accessibility Problems

We welcome feedback on the accessibility of this website. If you encounter an accessibility barrier, or if you need content in a different format, please contact us:

We aim to respond to accessibility feedback within 5 working days and to resolve issues within 30 days where it is within our control to do so.

9. Formal Complaints

If you are not satisfied with our response to your accessibility concern, you can contact the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) or the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland (ECNI) if you live in Northern Ireland. For guidance on your rights under the Equality Act 2010, visit equalityhumanrights.com.

10. Changes to This Statement

We will update this accessibility statement as we make improvements to the site or identify new issues. The "last updated" date at the top of this page reflects when the statement was last reviewed.
